ID Mountain Express | Foundation Awards Grant for Diabetes Patients

Money will help buy monitoring devices, medications…

To address an increase in demand for financial support in diabetes management, the St. Luke’s Wood River Foundation has awarded a $15,000 grant to St. Luke’s Wood River Medical Center to go toward care for uninsured and underinsured diabetes patients.

The grant will help patients access supplies such as blood glucose monitoring devices and medications such as insulin.

“Continuous glucose monitoring helps patients understand and manage their blood sugar levels in real time, which motivates lifestyle adjustments and better compliance with their treatment,” said St. Luke’s diabetes educator Yolanda Arriaga in a news release.

Using that technology, “I’ve seen firsthand how patients improve their blood sugar control, making positive changes like choosing healthier foods and increasing physical activity,” Arriaga said.

Funding will also allow St. Luke’s to provide patients assistance in paying for medications, risk-reduction screenings and specialized nutritional support.

“This grant ensures that local patients with diabetes can benefit from the most advanced care possible,” said Megan Tanous, St. Luke’s Wood River Foundation’s chief development officer, in the news release. “Better blood glucose management leads to healthier outcomes, reduced emergency room visits and lower long-term healthcare costs.”
